Help Make My Film Production Journal Entry - August 10, 2003

Well, I spent most of the weekend updating this website and rehearsing  with my band Carousel. We're starting to get busier with gigs so that means  I have to be a little more disciplined with my time. I've set up a schedule  for 2 hours of writing everyday. Even if I don't feel like writing, I've  begun sitting down at the computer until I write as much as my brain will  create within that time. I'm only working on the script itself during those  two hours. I'm not even allowing myself to work on the website or anything  else but the script. It's been a little hard over the past couple of days  because I'm so tempted to finish the website's new look but I have to stick  to the schedule.

In case you've never written a script or anything of that nature, I'll  explain how I do it. Aside from the basic format, everyone has their own  ways of writing. For each scene, there has to be a beginning, middle and  end. As I said before, I wrote this script a while back. It has gone through  numerous transformations with this final one being a true expression of  the vision I've always wanted for the first feature film I would create.  It takes a while for each scene to be written because I actually see the  characters in my head and imagine the full dialogue between them. I see  the scenery first, the characters involved, how they're dressed, how they're  groomed. Then I envision the action and the passion behind their every  movements. From there the scene begins to flow. I listen and try to type  as quickly as I hear these characters speak, then I read it back and make sure the dialogue is leading to the conclusion I need them to come to for  a smooth transition into the next scene.

I usually have a loosely written outline that I'm following as I write.  It's hard to do it without it unless it's the first draft. Actually my  first drafts usually flow faster if I just write from a brief synopsis.  Now, I do allow myself to veer from the original outline if the scene I'm  writing is leading to a better or more intense situation that'll drive  the story. So sometimes, sitting at the computer may produce several new  scenes, one complete scene or one line of dialogue. That's why this rewrite  is taking a while.

Anyway, stay tuned. The rewrite will be done soon, then I can get more  into the other things necessary to create this film.
